I did an incredible amount of research before purchasing this mattress. Ultimately, though, sleeping on it was all that mattered, and this mattress is very uncomfortable.
I have upper- and lower-back problems. I was sleeping on a spring mattress with a memory foam topper, but it was sunk-in in the middle, I was tossing all night, and I was waking up very stiff every morning. So I got this mattress (also known as the "NovaForm Pure Comfort Grand" mattress at Costco). I was out of town when it arrived and my family set it up, so it was able to fully decompress for two days before I slept on it. It shaped-up well and took about a week for the odor to go away.
Now this thing is FIRM! Add in the included (non-removable) cover and your fitted sheet, and you wouldn't even know this was memory foam. The first couple nights on this were very uncomfortable. I woke up with bad back pain and I was worried that I would re-slip a disk. Well, I decided to give it a few weeks before making a judgment. I am slightly more comfortable than I was the first couple nights, but that's just because I have gotten used to it: that doesn't make it any better! I am still tossing most of the night, and today I woke up very sore and quite stiff, so I decided that the jury was in and it was time to rate this thing.
I am going to put a three inch memory foam topper on this and I expect that it will be very comfortable. But I am not rating this mattress with a memory foam topper--I am rating this mattress as is.
If you can afford it, you really cannot beat a Tempur-Pedic. But if money is an issue, you can get a memory foam mattress for hundreds less than this one. Maybe it will suck, but, so does this one! So you might as well save some money.
Also, the mattress came one week after the estimated delivery date. Amazon contracted with some rinky-dink logistics company to deliver it and they weren't easy to work with.
I think some people get a memory foam mattress and they just don't like how memory foam feels, but that's not me. For two years I slept on a no-name memory foam mattress with a memory foam topper and it was great. Also, the best sleep I can remember was on my friend's Tempur-Pedic mattress. So, I love memory foam... but this mattress is just awful.
